The proposed new highway would connect Highway 501 in the Aynor area to the Highway 17 bypass in the Surfside Beach area. S.C. 22, a four-lane divided highway, currently runs from Highway 501 at Aynor to the North Strand near North Myrtle Beach.
A plan to extend Highway 22, a major highway in the Grand Strand, is making some headway– but not without pushback from residents and conservationists.
Extending Highway 22 is something planners have talked about for decades, and they are still in the early stages. But now, they want feedback from residents, some of whom are not happy with the proposed plans
“One of the proposed routes was going to come straight through our community,” said Kathi Spaloss, who attended a meeting Monday night where the public could learn more and offer feedback about the project.
Many of the attendees at the meeting, like Spaloss, are residents living near St. James High School, and said one of the 16 proposed highway routes would wipe out dozens of homes in its path.
